For Sara, it all started when she was six years old. Her dad came home from a hiking trip with a hen that he had found wandering the mountains. That hen taught Sara that chickens have unique personalities and brought her to enjoy raising them. With the support of her family, she was able to learn about chickens hands on! By the age of fifteen she had 200+ chickens and was selling fresh eggs at the local farmer’s markets. It was a good feeling to be doing something she loved while at the same time contributing to her community. She had to leave the business behind when she left for Colorado State University, but now that she has finished her degrees in Animal Science and Agricultural Business, she wants nothing more than to live the American Dream. She wants to wake up every morning with the satisfaction that she is doing what she loves and what she is good at.
Every hen at Sara’s Pick of the Coop is special, each is an individual, and each is treated with great care. The flock consists of a wide variety of breeds; this is because different breeds lay different colored eggs.
I sell rainbow dozens; each dozen has a multitude of colored eggs ranging from white to mauve, caramel to chocolate, and even olive green to robin’s egg blue.
Ever wonder which type of chicken lay which color egg in your carton? Well here is a quick rundown of egg color! Rhode Island Red’s are your classic red hen and lay a medium brown egg; Welsummers look very similar to the Rhode Island Red but lay darker colored brown eggs, even as dark as milk chocolate! Auracanas lay blue eggs of all shades while Americanas, a cross between an Auracana and any brown egg laying breed will lay green eggs. The Blue Leghorns, Brown Leghorns, and Silver Speckled Hamburgs all lay white eggs.
You can find Sara’s ranch raised eggs at the Larimer County Farmer’s Market on Saturday mornings in Fort Collins and the following local grocers: Mountain People’s Co-op in Eldora, Lucky’s Market and Alfalfa’s on Broadway in Boulder, and Cosmic Dog in Loveland.
